My Greatest Fears Are Being Realized

Tuesday April 1, 2003 C. L. Hanes

I was floored the other day to see Donald Rumsfeld, Defense Secretary of the United States of American, amidst the horrific military conflict under way in Iraq, put Syria on notice the "night vision goggles are being delivered to Iraq by Syria"!

Here we go! I have avoided talking about specifics of the night mare I endured the night of the "Decapitation Strike" against Saddam Hussein. I saw the Arab Countries (I’m not overly familiar with the area other than maps I’ve been seeing on television for the past couple months) forming the "teeth of a shark with its mouth open with the American and British troops fully ‘embedded’ in the throat of the beast".

I literally almost fell out of my seat! With all of the overwhelming speculation filling the airwaves today (mostly under the guise of being "news") I might as well lay mine out now. My vision was very real to me and I pray each day that it was simply a vision (more aptly a nightmare). With over fifty coalition deaths and it sounds like thousands of Iraqi military dead (I can’t comment on civilians as all we have is propaganda from the Arab side) the whole equation qualifies as a "nightmare".

It took me a little time to stop spinning as a result of the "throwing down of the gauntlet" to yet another Arab country. I admit absolute ignorance about the Arab nations other than the "Reader’s Digest" course experienced in the media over the past year or so since the Attack On The World Trade Center. The only thing that I did know about this area of the world was that "terrorism" was a visible part of their culture and that this "terrorism" was being exported abroad. Pardon my frankness but this is the only awareness that I held of the Region. I knew of the Palestinian suicide bombers striking Israel’s civilian population. I had heard of Osama Bin Ladin and of course Saddam Hussein has long been a global household name for using gas to kill hundreds of thousands of Kurds.

From the onset of this conflict (thanks again to a vision or dream - I’m not suggesting that I’m some kind of mystic or psychic - possibly just an overactive mind) I have felt sure that Saddam had hidden this stash of Weapons of Mass Murder (I don’t know why they call them Weapons of Mass Destruction when they are Destructing Human Lives) in Syria. I didn’t even know anything about Syria and I still don’t but if anyone wants to bet on it I’m open for business.

Now I see the Defense Secretary of the United States of America announcing to the world that America will not tolerate this hostile interference from this neighbour Arab State (the one in my dream)! A bunch of question spring to my mind. If Syria is, in fact, conspiring and/or collaborating with Iraq, why would they wait until the fight is in full swing to start shipping night vision goggles? Why would the U.S.A. address Syria publicly instead of through diplomatic channels?

Obviously, (to me), America shares my suspicions that Saddam Hussein has hidden his stash abroad and abroad, mathematically suggests Syria. My instincts tell me that if I can calculate my equations to conclude that Syria is dirty in this, so has the American Administration (they really are incredible). I don’t believe that the Administration does anything without dissecting strategizing testing and re-testing every possible scenario thus, my arrival at this conclusion would be well behind them. It’s fun to at least do the math.

So, possibly Syria and Iran constitute legitimate targets here. When I telescope out from the virtual globe in my minds-eye I see Afghanistan and to its’ left Iran and to it’s left Iraq and to it’s left Syria. Coincidences usually point to something I have found in my life. Is it a coincidence that Donald Rumsfeld would mention both Syria and Iran while they have massive troop deployment already in the area? The first rumour of a "unified Arab front" appeared this morning suggesting that all Arab States are uniting to oppose the Americans and British.

I don’t believe that America and Britain would just end up there thus, all of this must have already been "war-gamed" (I’m picking up all of the lingo) so I guess I am sort of at ease. I am speculating on much of the foundation of my arguments but it appears to me that most reporters and journalists view speculation as a basis for their argument so I am comfortable setting out mine.

I’m dismayed again this morning to listen to the Iraqi Vice President "Taha Yassin Ramadan" Press Conference once again addressing the world community exposing innocence and being invaded. Surely one of these masses of reporters could ask him why he didn’t simply prove to the UN that they, in fact, do not have these. There would not have been a military conflict had they complied with reasonable demands of the UN. Possibly before going in front of the global community and accusing America and Britain arbitrarily attacking them they could explain to us why they simply could not have met the requirements set out in Resolution 1441.

I’m Charles Laurie Hanes
